Tom's 30-Minute Viral Note Template + Commenting Mini Class

Training #2
27

What a blast yesterday!

Who else found Tom’s template super easy to use and super effective?

That’s the power of a prompt combined with a format template that guides you while giving flexibility.

We all have a gold mine of rich and unique life experiences inside of us that are waiting to be expressed and received by others.

We just need the right trigger and support.

That’s what Substack Campfire is about.

When we start posting daily on Monday, July 8, you will:

  • Receive a new prompt every single day and several new format templates every week!

  • Have the support of the community behind you.

Three Next Steps To Do Now

  • Attend today’s live event. Our second event is today at 11am EST with Linda Lebrun, a Director of Writing Partnerships at Substack. I’ve spoken to Linda several times, and she is incredibly supportive. More so, she knows what all of the top writers on the platform are doing to succeed, and she is filled with extremely helpful, nonobvious advice! Join with this Zoom link.

  • Engage and comment with 10 people’s Notes. Over 35 people shared their amazing Notes yesterday! I invite you to take the time to read and comment on at least 10 Notes. By doing this, you will not only be showing love to other members of the community, you will be getting to know everyone’s stories. And this will form the basis of your relationships and the community going into the month and beyond.

  • Watch the recording. If you weren’t able to make yesterday’s live event, it’s ok. You can watch the recording above. Also, the slides, time stamps, AI chapter summaries, and chat transcript are all further down this page.

Camper Notes Roundup

We attempted to get everyone’s notes in the roundup below! If we missed your Note, let us know in the comments!

Amazing posts everyone! Felt really touched reading them…

(00:01) Substack 100 Subscribers Workshop

This chapter welcomes a large group of participants to an engaging and interactive Zoom session focused on gaining the first 100 subscribers on Substack. We emphasize the importance of dismissing perfectionism, giving grace, and recognizing the value in each person. The agenda includes writing a note together, a mini-class on effective commenting, a meet and greet in breakout rooms, and sharing notes with group members for feedback. The session concludes with a Q&A to address any remaining questions, ensuring participants leave with practical tips and a sense of community.

(12:06) Crafting Quality Content for Success

This chapter recounts my journey from discovering a love for reading at 16 to becoming an avid writer and entrepreneur. I explain how books on various subjects expanded my knowledge, eventually leading me to write a book in college. Despite early struggles and a hiatus, an opportunity to write for Forbes reignited my passion. By focusing on quality and writing about what made my heart sing, I saw significant success, with my articles achieving high viewership. I share insights on the importance of continuous learning, quality content creation, and monetizing writing, offering guidance for building a sustainable and joyful writing practice on platforms like Substack.

(20:31) Creating Engaging Substack Notes

This chapter introduces the concept of writing notes on Substack, likening them to tweets on X, and emphasizes their utility in gaining discoverability and building relationships within the writing community. We guide you through the initial steps of note writing, including selecting a meaningful photo from your phone's gallery and crafting a succinct, impactful caption. Additionally, we discuss the strategic use of bullet points to enhance readability and convey information efficiently. Through a hands-on exercise, we illustrate how to create engaging and concise notes that can serve as a foundation for longer, more detailed posts.

(32:19) Crafting Compelling Substack Notes

This chapter focuses on the art of note writing and its role in attracting paid subscribers by showcasing expertise and knowledge. We explore the importance of longer, in-depth notes versus shorter ones and discuss how personal touches can humanize the author to their audience. Michael shares insights on creating suspense through detailed storytelling, referencing Alfred Hitchcock's techniques, and the value of revealing key facts to maintain audience interest. We also highlight the balance between professional content and personal anecdotes, suggesting an 80-20 rule for content creation. This chapter provides strategies for engaging readers and maintaining their interest through structured and thoughtful writing.

(50:10) Writing With Authenticity and Vulnerability

This chapter focuses on the use of self-deprecation in writing, exploring its effectiveness in humanizing the writer and creating a tonal shift within a piece. We discuss the importance of being authentic rather than forcing humor and emphasize the value of adding tonal shifts to break up the narrative and engage the audience emotionally. The conversation also touches on the process of discovering the lesson or message in a piece of writing, often realized only upon reflection. Additionally, practical tips are shared for editing and improving posts, with a brief guide on navigating Substack to find notes and manage content. The session concludes with encouragement and extra time for participants to refine their writing, along with a teaser of more activities to come.

(01:09:43) Engaging With Your Substack Community

This chapter addresses the common struggle of feeling like your notes and articles on Substack are going unnoticed. We explore the misconception that simply posting content will attract an audience and highlight the importance of community engagement. By sharing a relatable story, we illustrate how supporting other writers through likes and meaningful comments can transform your experience on the platform. This proactive approach not only boosts others' morale but also fosters reciprocal support, helping you grow your audience and find your niche. The key takeaway is that active participation and encouragement within the community are essential for overcoming the initial hurdles of gaining visibility and making meaningful connections on Substack.

(01:18:19) Building Relationships Through Substack Comments

This chapter focuses on effective commenting strategies to build a community and engage with other writers, especially on platforms like Substack. I share my method for crafting meaningful comments by connecting personal experiences with the author's content and emphasize the importance of engaging with topics that truly resonate with you. I also provide tips on finding lesser-known yet quality writers by exploring followers of well-known authors, encouraging the discovery of hidden gems. By consistently leaving thoughtful comments on work you love, you can foster reciprocal engagement and grow a supportive network of writers and readers.

(01:27:17) Breakout Room Introductions and Sharing

This chapter focuses on organizing and managing a virtual meet-and-greet session. We discuss the process of sharing screens, utilizing breakout rooms, and setting ground rules for participant introductions. The plan involves dividing attendees into small groups for brief introductions, following an alphabetical order by first name, and sharing their backgrounds and experiences as writers. We address technical issues, such as ensuring participants can unmute themselves and assisting individuals who get disconnected from their breakout rooms. The session concludes with an opportunity for participants to share links to their work and engage in initial comments and feedback.

(02:01:54) Navigating Substack Features and Building Relationships

This chapter offers an insightful walkthrough of navigating a user interface for newsletters, focusing on the nuances of creating and interacting with notes and posts. We explore how to leverage commenting on others' notes for relationship building, the balance between free notes and paid newsletter content, and strategies for maintaining subscriber engagement. Additionally, we address the importance of fostering connections through direct messages and the flexibility offered by platforms like Substack, particularly regarding data ownership and the ability to switch platforms seamlessly. The discussion highlights practical tips for optimizing user engagement and building meaningful relationships within the community.

(02:07:26) Building Relationships and Success on Substack

This chapter explores the etiquette and strategies for engaging with the Substack platform, focusing on turning comments into notes and building relationships to boost post visibility. We discuss the importance of interacting with others to gain traction, noting that initial engagement from a close community can significantly impact the reach of your content. Additionally, we highlight Substack's unique features that facilitate relationship building, such as direct messaging, recommendations, guest posts, and co-writing articles. By leveraging these tools, creators can enhance their visibility and foster deeper connections, ultimately leading to greater success on the platform.

00:57:40 Thomas Kuegler: Replying to "I hear a lot these d..."

David it’s super important. Vulnerability means that you’re taking a risk saying something that most people probably wouldn’t say. Thus you immediately stand out, you know?

Rajik you’re ahead of the curve! 🙂

Are you using it as a noun or a verb?

00:59:37 Kristin van Tilburg: I posted a couple notes over the weekend…can’t find them!

01:00:04 Michael Glenn: I wasn’t sure if I was up to this challenge today but I’ve got it done, maybe not entirely to Tom’s specifications but I got it done

01:00:16 Shelby Tutty: Replying to "My notes seem to be ..."

Love it!! Thank you so much!

01:01:00 Michael Glenn: Right on I just got excited 😆

01:01:48 Duy Le: Replying to "Is there a space in ..."

you can find it in the note section on your profile page

01:02:53 Duy Le: Replying to "Can I schedule notes..."

there is no schedule tool as I know at the moment

01:03:16 Nancy Buck: Briliant! I just wrote a post on FUN, and this note I wrote is FUN! I can't wait to post this tomorrow. Now I get to learn how to post a personal picture, or I could use a stock photo of an emu

01:03:35 Shelby Tutty: Reacted to "Briliant! I just wro..." with ❤️

01:03:48 Sharon Hines: Replying to "Can I schedule notes..."

I would love to see that as an added feature. Yes, you can schedule posts, but not Notes.

01:04:40 Michael Glenn: I also like reading it out loud. That helps me spot words or phrases that might feel awkward or out of place

01:04:43 Rachel: Replying to "Can I schedule notes..."

Aha, good to know :)

01:05:02 anastasiyaprh: Replying to "I also like reading ..."

Me too! 🙂

01:05:08 Rajik: I am afraid I can’t post the one I wrote just now as I selected a personal photo

01:05:11 Michael Glenn: Reacted to "Me too! 🙂" with 👍

01:05:45 Shelby Tutty: I let MS Word read it to me. I find I miss words when I read it.

01:06:14 Shelby Tutty: Replying to "I also like reading ..."

I let MS Word read it to me. I find I miss words when I read it.

01:06:26 Thomas Kuegler: Replying to "I am afraid I can’t ..."

@Michael Glenn It catches so much that I miss. I think you'll love it.

@Michael Simmons I’m not sure honestly. I think I feel like I’m trying to hard to engage with strangers (introvert here) and also probably a bit of imposter syndrome thinking my comments and experiences don’t really leave a dent and just seem like I’m trying to hard if that makes sense? Those are my issues to work thru and deal with though - can only do that by commenting more and getting out my comfort zone.
